Italy’s largest lake runs 52 kilometres across three regions and changes character dramatically between its Alpine north and its wide, warm south. We have a favourite, but the lake has strong competition. Here is where to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Beautiful Cities and Towns on Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sirmione<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sirmione<\/a> sits at the end of a narrow peninsula in the southern lake, with the Castello Scaligero<\/a> guarding its only land entrance. At the tip of the peninsula, the Grotte di Catullo<\/a> are the remains of one of northern Italy’s largest Roman villas, dated to the first century BC. The hilltop position alone, with views across the southern lake in two directions, earns the visit as much as the ruins do. The thermal baths at the southern end of the peninsula draw visitors year-round. Go early, and not in August if you can avoid it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Scaliger<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Malcesine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Malcesine<\/a> is medieval in structure, with streets narrow enough that the lake appears in unexpected gaps between the buildings. A Scaligero castle sits above the harbour and a cable car reaches the Monte Baldo ridge at 1,760 metres. The view from the top takes in the full width of the lake. The hiking<\/a> descent back to town takes two hours and is best done before late morning, when cloud typically builds against the mountain. On the way down, the path passes through meadow land and olive groves before the town reappears below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gargnano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Of all the lake’s towns, Gargnano is the one we would make the strongest case for. It sits on the western shore, has resisted the resort logic that shaped its neighbours, and carries a fourteenth-century Franciscan church alongside the history of Mussolini’s wartime residency at the Villa Feltrinelli. The cloister columns of the church are carved with lemon-tree motifs, a reference to the citrus cultivation that once ran the length of the western shore. The tourist infrastructure, by the standards of the better-known lake towns, is minimal. That is the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torri del Benaco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Smaller and quieter than most, Torri del Benaco<\/a> is routinely underestimated. The old town<\/a> is well-preserved and the harbour is watched over by a Scaligero castle that houses a small museum on fishing and olive oil production. A weekly market<\/a> draws visitors from across the eastern shore, and the restaurants outperform what the town’s size would suggest. For a base on the eastern shore<\/a>, it is the one we would choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-Visit Places on Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Punta San Vigilio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Punta San Vigilio<\/a> is our answer to the headline question. A private headland between Garda town and Torri del Benaco, with a Venetian harbour below a sixteenth-century villa and a small beach below the headland. It has remained in private hands and therefore undeveloped, which sets it apart from almost every comparable spot on the lake. Visitors pay a small entry fee for the beach. Go on a weekday in summer. Weekend queues build early and work against what you came for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tremosine sul Garda<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tremosine<\/a> sits on a plateau 400 metres above the western shore, reached via a road through the Forra del Brasa gorge, where limestone walls press close on both sides and the road barely accommodates two passing vehicles. The Terrazza del Brivido at Pieve looks straight down at the lake from that height. The “balcony of terror” translation is only mild hyperbole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Most Beautiful Scenic Routes on Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The western shore road, the SS45bis, is carved through cliff faces from Gargnano northward, with tunnel sections where the road passes through rock rather than around it. The stretch from Gargnano up to Limone<\/a> is the one to prioritise. Allow more time than the distance suggests, as the road is narrow and the views are distracting. Why not leave the car and rent a bike? The cycle path<\/a> is a more relaxing option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driving up to Tremosine via the Forra del Brasa gorge is the route we would choose over the lakeside alternatives: three kilometres through a slot canyon, then a plateau that seems to appear from nowhere. For visitors arriving from Verona, the SS249 enters the lake at Peschiera del Garda<\/a> and improves considerably after Lazise<\/a> heading north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best Viewpoints and Photo Spots on Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Terrazza del Brivido<\/a> above Tremosine gives the most vertiginous view on the lake, 400 metres straight down to the water. Monte Baldo above Malcesine is the most commanding, with the full width of the lake visible from 1,760 metres; arrive on the first cable car before cloud builds against the mountain. On the eastern shore, Monte Luppia<\/a> sits above Punta San Vigilio and gives a higher version of the headland view, with the Venetian harbour visible below and the full expanse of water beyond it. The Rocca di Manerba<\/a> adds castle ruins to the panorama, which most viewpoints here lack. It is a 25-minute walk and considerably less visited than it deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning Your Visit to Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

May and June, and again in September, are the months we would suggest. July and August bring temperatures between 28 and 33 degrees and crowds that fill every decent beach<\/a> by mid-morning. The weather<\/a> in late spring is warm with clearer light, and September sees the eastern shore vineyards begin to show colour. Valpolicella<\/a> country starts just east of Bardolino, and a short drive into the hills earns considerably better prices than the restaurant wine list. The Bardolino wine festival<\/a> in October is one of the better reasons to visit the lake out of season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For getting around, the ferry<\/a> covers the major towns, and the crossing from Torri del Benaco to Maderno takes 30 minutes across the widest section of the lake. A car is useful for Tremosine and the mountain viewpoints. Vespa rental<\/a> is available on both shores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For restaurants<\/a>, the smaller towns consistently outperform the busier ones. Torri del Benaco and Gargnano both do straightforward local food well, and Verona<\/a> is close enough from the southern end to justify a day trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
