Ask anyone who knows the lake and they’ll tell you the settlements around Lake Garda are really towns and villages, though a few, like Desenzano, hold the formal Italian title of citt\u00e0<\/em>. Semantics aside, the cities on Lake Garda are what pull millions of visitors here every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lake changes character as you move along it. The north is narrow and hemmed in by cliffs, with an almost alpine feel to it. The south opens out into wide bays backed by low morainic hills. Each town has its own personality, and half the fun is working out which one fits the trip you actually want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Beautiful Cities on Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some places here are worth seeing purely for how they sit. Limone sul Garda is the headline, its houses stacked up a near-vertical cliff with old lemon terraces cut into the rock above them. Malcesine is the other one that keeps ending up on postcards, a mass of pale buildings piled below a castle right at the water’s edge. And Sirmione<\/a> earns it too, laid out along a spit so thin the lake closes in on both sides of the old town at once. Those are the looks. Top Towns on the Northern Shore of Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The northern end feels unlike the rest of the lake. It’s tighter here, boxed in by mountains, and the water stays cool enough that people tend to sail on it rather than swim. Riva del Garda anchors the very top, over the border in Trentino, a proper working town with a medieval tower on its main square and a moated fortress down by the water. Next to it, Torbole runs on wind. The dependable breezes that come through morning and afternoon have made it one of Europe’s better-known windsurfing bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two lookers up this end earn their keep with more than scenery. At Limone, the cliffside Limone sul Garda cycle path<\/a> cantilevered out over open water has become a reason to come on its own. At Malcesine<\/a>, a cable car lifts you off the lakefront and up Monte Baldo in slowly rotating cabins, with the whole lake unrolling beneath you at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historic Towns on the Southern Shore of Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The south is broader and warmer, with shallower water and proper beaches, which is why families tend to settle down here. Sirmione<\/a>‘s looks you’ve already got; what fills a day there is the Grotte di Catullo<\/a>, the sprawling Roman villa ruins spread across the tip of the peninsula, and the thermal spas fed by hot springs under the lake. Peschiera del Garda<\/a> sits where the Mincio river drains out of the lake, its star-shaped Venetian walls now written into a UNESCO listing. Desenzano is the biggest and busiest of the bunch, its harbourfront still going well after dark, and it holds both a set of late-Roman mosaics and the lake’s main railway station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Round the eastern shore, Lazise<\/a> keeps its walls and a tight little harbour, along with a charter of self-rule that locals will tell you made it one of Italy’s first free comuni<\/em>. Bardolino lends its name to the light red on every wine list nearby. And Garda sits in a soft, shallow bay, with the wooded headland of Punta San Vigilio<\/a> just up the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best Lake Garda Cities for Sights and Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Culture on the lake tends to cluster around a few big names rather than one grand city. The medieval Scaligeri of Verona left a run of fortresses around the shore, at Sirmione, Malcesine, Torri del Benaco and Lazise, all swallow-tail battlements and water. The Castello Scaligero<\/a> at Sirmione, moated on three sides, is the one that ends up on most cameras. For something odder, the Vittoriale degli Italiani above Gardone Riviera was the hillside estate of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, and it’s every bit as eccentric as he was, a full warship prow built into the gardens and all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wine is its own draw. The Valpolicella<\/a> hills sit just east of the lake toward Verona, while the vineyards around Bardolino and the Lugana flats near Sirmione produce most of what you’ll be drinking at dinner. And if you want a genuine city with an opera season and a Roman arena, Verona<\/a> is under half an hour by train from the southern shore, which makes it an easy day out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Get Around Lake Garda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s no railway around the lake itself, so getting between towns means the boats<\/a>, or the road if you’ve got a car or Vespa<\/a>. The ferries are the ones to lean on. Public boats and faster hydrofoils link most of the larger towns, and a couple of car ferries cut across the middle, including the run between Torri del Benaco<\/a> and Toscolano-Maderno. In summer that’s often quicker and far more pleasant than driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shoreline road, the Gardesana, rings the whole lake and is spectacular, though the western side threads through a long series of tunnels and both sides clog up badly in August. Desenzano and Peschiera sit on the Milan to Venice line if you’re coming by train, and Verona airport is the closest for most of the southern towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
