The site of the Roman villa is located at the tip of a two-mile promontory into the lake. <\/span><b>The villa consists of two large residential areas that are divided by a garden.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The garden was encircled by long colonnades, so typical of classical Roman architecture. On the sides, the garden was surrounded by porticos and terraces.<\/span><b> The garden itself was divided by paths and flowerbeds.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Today, the garden and surrounding areas contain over a thousand olive trees, some of which are hundreds of years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Archaeologists have also discovered that the villa housed a spa area, where the inhabitants would have been able to relax.<\/span><b> The Romans called this type of villa \u201cOptium\u201d, which was used to describe a holiday home.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This suggests that it was the retreat of a wealthy family. And there is also evidence that it was used as a cemetery. <\/span><b style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; background-color: transparent;\">During the Italian Renaissance, travellers who discovered the ruins of the Grottoes of Catullus believed them to be natural caves or grottoes.<\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; background-color: transparent;\"> Around the same time, many Roman poets were rediscovered, including Gaius Valerius Catullus.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of his poems, Catullus mentions a villa in Sirmione to which he describes returning. This led Renaissance scholars to believe that the structure discovered in Sirmione was the one he was talking about. Merging both those beliefs, the site became known as <\/span><b>Grotta di Catullo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or more often <\/span><b>Grotte di Catullo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it is very unlikely that Catullus ever saw the villa, as it was built after his death.
