The Rich History of the Grotte of Catullus
The oldest part found at the archaeological site of Grotte di Catullo is a structure that was built in the 1st century BC. This seems to have been an earlier construction, on which structures the villa was built at the start of the 1st century AD. Archaeologists believe that the buildings were used for about two centuries, as it seems to have been abandoned in the 3rd century AD.
In the 4th and 5th centuries AD, the villa was used as part of the fortifications surrounding Sirmione. And there is also evidence that it was used as a cemetery. During the Italian Renaissance, travellers who discovered the ruins of the Grottoes of Catullus believed them to be natural caves or grottoes. Around the same time, many Roman poets were rediscovered, including Gaius Valerius Catullus.
In one of his poems, Catullus mentions a villa in Sirmione to which he describes returning. This led Renaissance scholars to believe that the structure discovered in Sirmione was the one he was talking about. Merging both those beliefs, the site became known as Grotta di Catullo or more often Grotte di Catullo.
However, it is very unlikely that Catullus ever saw the villa, as it was built after his death. But that doesn’t stop the impressive ruins to still be called after these two myths.
